For the ever lovely M. Word...

Name: Kelly

Major: Studio Art (with a concentration on Graphic Design and Photography)

What’s Next: I hope to do SOMETHING with my degree (don’t we all?) I hope to either a. Get a job at a design firm or b. Work for a magazine doing layouts. I think now my dream is to be an Art Director at a magazine/ some sort of publication…

Something about myself: I like sarcasm, fashion, good design, books, Hugh Grant, emo music, yellow, and ponies. I play polo for MSU. I like to cook, but not to clean. I like any furry little animal, rough gemstones, feathers…traveling, old motorcycles, and cheese. I hate people who don’t pick up their UGG –clad feet, think they are better than everyone else, and people who don’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain. (not to say I don’t enjoy playing in the rain…).

My Art/Design: I’m really sort of making art for art’s sake right now. Which most (or all…) of my professors aren’t really in to. I just like to make pretty things.
But, I like looking to fashion to inspire my art (instead of the other way around) the way clothes move and color combinations and textures always get to me.
Working with different mediums is always fun, so I try to the pigeonhole myself into one thing. But photography and painting are up there, as well as ceramics.

Stuff I love:

Artists I identify with:
Alex Katz-  His use of color I think is genius and so simplified. I am trying to “do less “ in my work. He also captures texture quite nicely, which is something I am also looking to achieve..
Marilyn Minter-  She was actually (without me knowing at the time) one of the reasons I chose to do art as a career. She knows how to be provocative without being obvious. She loves super macro stuff ( me too!). She has amazing textures in all of her photos/paintings, and she makes really large stuff that is a mix of surrealism and pop art that could also be a fantastic ad. That’s the kind of versatility I want in my work.
Terry Richardson/Jurgeon Teller: Both of these men have lighting qualities that I envy. While Teller uses a softer light than Richardson, they both have a blown out quality that I think adds to the art, and a really raw feeling to their subjects that I appreciate and envy.

Drawing and the Creative Process: I use drawing to sketch out ideas for future art works, and I used to draw for fun in my free time (until I got to college…)

Feelings on Drawing: I used to really like drawing, but I thought the only way to draw was realistic, exact drawing.  I would spend forever on one angle. Then, I got to college, and I drew still life’s for hours…not that engaging. So right now, I’m not so much into it. But I think I have the potential to enojy it, if given the chance.

What’s Drawing? To me, drawing is putting down lines on a surface. As simple as that. So maybe even writing is a for of drawing…

Why this course?: I love collage. I used to do it ( badly, I admit) all the time. I collect zillions of magazines. So, I feel I should put them to work. And I think that this class will help me with my bigger ideas of fantasy and surrealism. Because I have to make things that probably wont be the most realistic. How it relates to drawing? I’m not entirely sure.
